The Story of Sahu Gajak Bhandar — 150 Years of Handcrafted Gajak from Rajasthan
Every piece of gajak that leaves Sahu Gajak Bhandar carries 150 years of family history. This is that story.
1875 — Where It All Began: Shri Dhanna Lal Sahu Ji
The story of Sahu Gajak Bhandar began in 1875 in the small village of Menpura, Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, when Shri Dhanna Lal Sahu Ji first started preparing traditional winter gajak at home.
In those days, life was simple and Rajasthan's winter nights were harsh. There were no modern heating facilities, and weddings or family celebrations often continued for 7 to 10 days. Guests and baratis stayed in open areas, under trees, and in temporary arrangements. Families wanted to serve something special during these cold winter gatherings — a sweet that was not only delicious, but also gave warmth, energy, and comfort.
With this thought, Shri Dhanna Lal Sahu Ji prepared gajak using the simplest and purest ingredients: til (sesame seeds), gud (jaggery), and traditional sweet-making methods passed down within the family. Served at festivals, marriage ceremonies, and family gatherings, its fresh taste, natural crunch, and comforting warmth were loved by all. Guests appreciated it so much that they encouraged him to keep preparing it for more occasions.
What began as a homemade winter sweet slowly became a family tradition and a symbol of Rajasthani hospitality.
1920 — Taking Gajak to the People: Shri Peerulal Sahu Ji
As the years passed, the tradition grew stronger. In 1920, Shri Peerulal Sahu Ji — the second generation — carried the legacy forward by travelling from village to village across Rajasthan, visiting haats (weekly markets), fairs, festivals, and winter markets.
Alongside the family's existing work in jaggery and sesame oil, he introduced more people to the authentic taste of handmade gajak. His travels took the family name to more homes, more communities, and new generations of customers across the region.
1985 — The First Shop: Shri Ramakarn Sahu Ji
In 1985, Shri Ramakarn Sahu Ji — the third generation — took the family legacy a significant step forward by establishing a physical sweets shop alongside the family's oil manufacturing business in Menpura.
This milestone gave customers a trusted, permanent destination for fresh traditional gajak and winter sweets. Over time, the brand became known across Sawai Madhopur for its honest taste, quality ingredients, and sweets prepared with care — the same values passed down through every generation.
2017 — Going Digital: Shri Ghanshyam Sahu Ji & Shri Ramavtar Sahu Ji
In 2017, the fourth generation — Shri Ghanshyam Sahu Ji and Shri Ramavtar Sahu Ji — brought this 142-year-old heritage into the digital age by launching online sales at sahugajak.com.
With this step, the authentic taste of Rajasthan began reaching customers far beyond local markets. What once began as a homemade winter sweet for family functions in Menpura started reaching homes across India — from Delhi and Mumbai to Bangalore and Kolkata.
Today Sahu Gajak Bhandar is also available on Amazon, Flipkart, JioMart, BigBasket, Blinkit, and Swiggy Instamart.
Today — The 5th Generation & a Global Vision
The fifth generation of Sahu Gajak Bhandar is now carrying this legacy forward with a larger vision: to take the authentic taste of Rajasthan to customers across the world.
With improved packaging, online platforms, modern distribution, and the same uncompromising traditional values, the family is working to make Sahu Gajak Bhandar a trusted name not only across India but also among Indian sweet lovers worldwide.
Even as the brand expands globally, its heart remains rooted in the same tradition that began in 1875 in a small Rajasthani village. Every piece of gajak continues to reflect the values of purity, tradition, trust, warmth, and authentic Rajasthani taste.

What Has Never Changed in 150 Years
Through five generations and 150 years, three things have remained constant at Sahu Gajak Bhandar:
- The ingredients: pure til (sesame), gud (jaggery), and cow ghee — no preservatives, no liquid glucose, no artificial colours or flavours.
- The method: hand-hammered dough, 10–15 hours per batch — a technique no machine can replicate and the reason our gajak has its distinctive khasta (crisp-flaky) texture.
- The location: Menpura, Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan — our home and manufacturing base for 150 years.
